2006 HOCKOMOCK LEAGUE FOOTBALL PREVIEW
Source: Boston Globe

September 1, 2006

CANTON
Coach: Jim Goff (second year)
Last year's record: 0-10
Playing surface: Turf
Returning starters (10): Jason Allen, OL-DL, 6-0, 250, Sr.; Rob Felize, S, 5-10, 170, Sr.; Jake Graziano, LB, 5-8, 170, Sr.; Gentry Jones DB-TB, 5-9, 165, Sr.; Glenn Allen, K-P-LB, 6-1, 235, Sr.; Lonnie Page, WR-CB, 5-7, 140, Sr.; Mike Powell, FB/LB, 5-11, 215, Sr.; Matt Murphy, OL-DL, 6-0, 240, Sr.; Dan Myers, FB-LB, 5-11, 185, Sr.; Israel Abraham, CB, 5-7, 150, Jr.
Strengths: Team speed
Concerns: Offensive line and winning mentality
Outlook: The Bulldogs will try to improve after a winless season. The team opens its season with non league matchups against Quincy and Pembroke before starting ultracompetitive league play against cochamp Mansfield. ``This team is pretty intense and I think we are going to win some games," said Goff. The quarterback competition is between Eddie Currie and Dan Pendergast.

FOXBORO
Coach: Jack Martinelli (25th year, 190-57-5)
Last year's record: 10-2
Playing surface: Grass
Football website: foxborough.k12.ma.us/fpsweb/FHS/FHSindex.html
Returning starters (7): Chris Redd, OT-DT, 6-3, 305, Sr.; Ryan Moreshead, LB-TE, 6-2, 218, Sr.; Drew Connolly, S-QB, 6-3, 192, Sr.; Dave Flynn, RB-LB, 5-9, 205, Sr.; Kevin McCarthy, LB, 6-1, 205, Sr.; Matt Goode, WR-DB, 6-2, 178, Sr.; Ali Mourtada, K, 5-9, 155, Jr.
Strengths: Depth at receiver and size on both lines, defense
Concerns: Loss of 25 seniors
Outlook: A great group of receivers complements Connolly, but the true power of the team is its stingy defense, although it took a hit by losing eight players from a team that allowed 53 points in 12 games. The reigning league cochamps will return to their old-school smash-mouth days with strong offensive and defensive lines. ``I think we are a throwback Foxboro team from the '80s and '90s with a very physical defense," said Martinelli. Moreshead led the Warriors in tackles each of the past two seasons.

FRANKLIN
Coach: Brad Sidwell (13th year, 63-54-3)
Last year's record: 6-4
Playing surface: Artificial turf
Football Website: Franklin.k12ma.US
Returning starters (8): Bob Barcelo, C, 6-1, 215, Sr.; Matt Sidebottom, DT-T, 6-3, 285, Sr.; Darren Drew, WR-DB, 5-10, 165, Sr.; Mike McKenzie, G, 5-11, 220, Sr.; Jason Dellorco, LB, 6-4, 195, Jr.; Jim Vizaks, NG-T, 5-8, 240, Jr.; Jack Flynn, WR-FS, 5-10, 160, Jr.; Keith Donovan, P, 5-10, 145, Sr.
Strengths: Depth and size
Concerns: Inexperience at skill positions
Outlook: The ongoing QB competition between juniors Dave Brunelli and Tyler Dow may be the deciding factor in whether Franklin can improve on last season's record. The team is very experienced on the offensive line, opening holes for its trio of backs: Matt Brune, Eloma Johnson, and Jake Evers. ``We are still trying to break into the upper echelon of the league," said Sidwell. Four of the team's first five games are at home.

KING PHILIP
Coach: Brian Lee (second year)
Last year's record: 3-7
Playing surface: Grass
Football website: highschoolsports.net
Returning starters (12): Paul Akrouche, T-DT, 6-0, 240, Sr.; Kyle Patten, G, 5-11, 230, Sr.; Pat Lewicki, C, 5-10, 210, Sr.; Sam Jackson, G, 6-2, 235, Sr.; Steve Curtin, TE-DE, 6-0, 190, Sr.; Anthony Monahan, WR, 6-3, 175, Sr.; Sam Wilcox, WR-S, 5-9, 170, Sr.; Andrew Lithfield, FB-ILB, 5-7, 175, Sr.; Doug Dyke, RB, 5-7, 175, Sr.; Kyle Harwood, QB-S, 6-1, 185, Sr.; Josh Malone, CB, 5-9, 170, Sr.; Brian Denehy, CB, 5-8, 170, Sr.
Strengths: Senior leadership
Concerns: Team speed
Outlook: An inexperienced roster was the story of KP's 3-7 team a year ago -- but that is not the case in '06. The 12 seniors give King Philip much needed veteran leadership. The Warriors will need Harwood and Dyke to have good years.

MANSFIELD
Coach: Mike Redding (19th year, 138-50-4)
Last year's record: 9-1
Playing surface: Artificial turf
Football website: Mansfieldfootball.org
Returning starters (13): Greg Martell, T, 6-5, 275, Sr.; Will Gasson, G, 6-0, 205, Jr.; Andrew Sullivan, C, 6-1, 210, Sr.; Andrew Bourget, G, 5-11, 225, Jr.; Corey Eason, TE-DE, 6-4, 270, Sr.; Tom Gilson, WR, 6-3, 185, Sr.; Mark Gilson, QB, 6-1, 175, Sr.; Eric DiPietrantonio, RB, 5-11, 190, Sr.; Matt Handley, DE, 6-3, 205, Sr.; A.J. Conlon, LB, 5-9, 185, Sr.; T.J. Powers, LB, 5-11, 185, Sr.; Joe Murphy, CB, 6-0, 180, Sr.; Matt Alksninis, K-WR, 6-1, 175, Sr.
Strengths: Size and skill positions
Concerns: Developing secondary and linebacker
Outlook: Redding's club will benefit from the return of the entire offensive line. A tough November stretch, games at North Attleboro and at home against Foxboro on Thanksgiving, may determine if the team can repeat as league champ , a feat that would set a school record with the fourth straight league title.

NORTH ATTLEBORO
Coach: Kurt Kummer (third year, 16-4)
Last year's record: 9-1
Playing surface: Grass
Football website: RedRocketeers.com
Returning starters (7): John Farroba, HB-DB, 5-10, 185, Sr.; Scott Schafer, TE-DE, 6-2, 195, Sr.; Anthony Sherman, HB-LB, 6-0, 228, Sr.; Michael Hart, G-DE, 6-0, 205, Jr.; Dan McNamara, G-DT, 5-10, 212, Sr.; Nick Chagnon, T-DT, 6-3, 230, Sr.; Brett Catarius, TE-DE, 6-4, 220, Sr.
Strengths: Winning tradition, senior leadership, linebackers.
Concerns: Replacing graduated stars.
Outlook: As the team rebuilds, Kummer will turn to his single-back offense, led by the talented Sherman, who amassed more than 800 yards last fall. Greg Dusel gets the starting quarterback job.

OLIVER AMES
Coach: Jim Artz (first year)
Last year's record: 6-5
Playing surface: Grass
Football website: oliverames.org/sports/
Returning starters (13): Chris Chamberlain, FB-LB, 6-2, 230, Sr.; Tom Kelly OT-DT, 6-1, 255, Sr.; Derrick Jean, FB-DT, 5-9, 235, Sr.; Steve Ivanski, G-DT, 6-2, 245, Jr., Austin Pina, WR-DB, 5-11, 185, Sr.; Allen Bryant, TE-DE, 5-10, 195, Sr.; Andre Duggan, OLB, 5-9, 185, Sr.; Rick McCole, RB-LB, 6-1, 195, Jr.; Brian Duggan, TE-S, 5-10, 185, Sr.; Nick Barrows, DE, 5-11, 205, Jr.; Tim Louko, RB-DB, 5-10, 175, Jr.; Nick Karavetsos, DT, 5-10, 225, Sr.; Tim Webster, DT-OT, 6-3, 285, Sr.
Strengths: Skill positions and linebackers
Concerns: Depth and adjusting to new coach
Outlook: Artz will attempt to build from the ground up and will have good senior leadership to assist in the transition. Senior Ryan McCarthy will take the snaps under center while kicker Alex Kershaw is one of the team's most talented athletes.

SHARON
Coach: John Cacace (second year)
Last year's record: 1-9
Playing surface: Grass
Football website: sharon.k12.ma.us/school/shs/pages/shsathl.html
Returning starters (8): Adam Aronson, RB-DB, 5-11, 175, Sr.; Jason Birnbaum, G-LB, 5-9, 180, Sr.; Lormensky Jean , RB-DB, 6-0, 180, Sr.; Dave Lovejoy, OT-DT, 6-3, 275, Sr., Gerald Nere, G-T, 6-0, 225, Sr., Justin Rodriguez, WR-DB, 6-0, 185, Sr.; Dan Godlin, T-LB, 6-0, 210, Jr.; Joe Kelly, C-DE, 5-11, 185, Sr.
Strengths: Commitment and solidarity
Concerns: Depth and inexperience
Outlook: If Sharon is to improve, it will have to endure a tough opening schedule with Stoughton and North Attleboro on the road and take advantage of five straight home games toward the end of the season. The Eagles rely on the Wing T formation with Jean at running back complemented by Aronson. Cacace will employ both a 5-2 and 4-4 defensive front.

STOUGHTON
Coach: Greg Burke (15th year, 77-61-4)
Last year's record: 7-3
Playing surface: Grass
Football website: highschoolsports.net
Returning starters (10): Mudo Ohimor, TE/DE, 6-3, 235, Sr.; Chris Russell, RB-FS, 5-10, 185, Sr.; Brendan Taylor, DT-OT, 6-2, 280, Sr.; Colby Gallagher, SS-FB, 6-2, 190, Sr.; Mike Donovan, LB-G, 5-11, 195, Sr.; Anthony LaCivita, QB-DB, 5-11, 175, Sr.; Joe Jeudy, RB-LB, 5-11, 180, Jr.; Al Burakoff, DE-G, 6-1, 235, Sr.; Tony Bickerton RB 5-8 170 Sr., Kevin Anderson WR 5-10 170 Sr.
Strengths: Team speed
Concerns: Playing in a tough league
Outlook: Stoughton has lived in the shadow of the Hockomock's ``Big Three" but that may change this year. Last year, the team ended the season 5-1 despite injuries to quarterback Matt Hoffman. One problem was team speed, which Burke sees as a strength this year. ``Running backs Jeudy and Russell were great for us last year," said Burke. ``They ran track and got faster."
